Song of the Seal Woman

A story from the Northern shores.
An original play told with theater and music.

A story of magic, beauty and lonely hearts… of loves lost and found, and a soul that is homeward bound...

based upon a tale found in the lore of
the Celts, the Scots, the tribes of northwest America,
Siberian and Icelandic peoples

"Song of the Seal Woman" is a play with music, jointly composed by playwright Dan Runyan, storyteller and writer Irene Vasquez, and harper and composer Ben Brown. The story line comes from an ancient folk story that is told in different versions in all the Northern regions of the world where there are seals (North America, England, Scotland, Ireland, Shetland, Icelandic Regions, Scandinavia & Siberia). In this story, a man sees a seal come onto the rocks and take off her seal skin - and she is a human being underneath! The man takes her seal skin, and she is then trapped in human form. He takes her as his wife, and he is a good husband to her, but she always longs for the sea....and then one day their child finds something hidden in the rocks... The play's script and harp compositions evoke beauty, tension, peace and mystery...longing for the sea, and for love... The child in all of us will enjoy the magical lighting, costumes and special effects which evoke the enchanted world where a human being can become an animal, and an animal can become a human being. For any adult in the audience who has ever looked for, lost or found their sense of place or self - their way home -this story will have much wisdom to offer through its imagery and symbol. "Song of the Seal Woman" is a tale of passion, sorrow, loss, re-emergence and renewal. The seal is a powerful symbol of the soul, and some peoples that live on the Northern shores maintain that still today there are seals that will take off their skins and become human for a time.

"The writing is effective, moves the plot along, informs, provokes thought and touches emotionally. The harp is outstanding! The pieces are lovely and melodic; the song of the sea, repeated throughout the show is pure magic. The acting is sensitive, humorous, perceptive, bold, sad, intuitive, dangerous, perplexing, loving, creative... it has nuance, lightness, humor, depth and mystery in all the right places. Go forth and do well!" - Bonnie Holland, Northern Inititatives
