 Las Posadas

Las Posadas is a Mexican traditional Christmas celebration, tracing Mary and Joseph's search to find an inn in Bethlehem. The participants form a procession, following Joseph and Mary, singing a song as they go from one door to the next, asking if there is a place where they may enter and stay the night. At each door, they are refused (eight stops in all), until at last, at the ninth door, they are let in (with a joyous final chorus to the song) where there is generous hospitality & a manger for the holy child.

In Mexico, this celebration takes place over nine nights, and the participants carry candles as they travel through the streets, singing the song and re-enacting Mary and Joseph's journey. Magical Rain Theaterworks has created an adaptation of this traditional celebration (where the event happens all at one afternoon or evening, and can be done indoors - with or without the candles). Our adaptation emphasizes the Mexican cultural emphasis on generosity and hospitality, and begins with a play ("Stone Soup") that teaches these values. We then teach our audience the song, and their roles (as the people following Joseph and Mary, and as the people at each door refusing their entry). The event ends with generous open arms hospitality (as Joseph and Mary are accepted and invited in at the last place, on the last night) a celebration, a piñata and refreshments.

"I would like to recommend the Magical Rain Theaterworks program "Posada." A Christmas program highlighting the Mexican traditional Christmas celebration complete with a piñata and refreshments.

The program came about when the Kalamazoo Public Library asked for a Hispanic holiday celebration to be enjoyed by all families. Dr. Irene Vasquez and Daniel Runyan of Magical Rain Theaterworks produced this interactive celebration in which the audience joins in the reenactment of Joseph and Mary's search in Bethlehem.

The program is for the whole family. It provides the audience a fun and engaging experience of another culture and its celebration. The audience does indeed actively participate and are delighted with the singing, the search for a room, the piñata and the beautifully decorated party space at the completion of the celebration.

Dr. Vasquez and Mr. Runyan have developed a true theaterworks. They are sensitive to the audience and the needs of the organizations hiring them. This program gets a four star rating."
