Performing Malinche: |

"Performing Malinche" is a vigorous, visceral, inner conversation between the
writter, scholar and performer of the play "Maldiciones de La Malinche". The conversation is "inner"
because Irene S. Vasquez, Ph.D. (alias "Ike") is the scholar who studied La Malinche's life and impact,
the writer who wrote the piece, and the performer who plays the role of La Malinche. We get a provocative glimpse
of the turbulence and reward of the creative process in this unique performance/ presentation. Performance excerpts
are threaded together with reflections and scholarship. "My writing process intertwines the physical acting out of the body with the mental fathoming of ancient & mysterious ideas. At times a play is fully enacted prior to being written down. So "research" for the ideas in a play are not merely an archival experience--they derive as much from my own & others' visceral, uttered accounting of their experience. My written work is affected both by the response of the audience & my own repetitive experience as a performer. The written-ness of the play transforms, it does not remain static. It grows, deepens, loses appendages, invents new muscles. I make the written word as mutable as the spoken." - Ike Vasquez |

"The words, expressions and aura were so moving and thought-provoking as
to stimulate a part of my senses rarely challenged." Judy Stephensan, Librarian, Shreiner College, Kerrville, TX "I really enjoyed Irene. What I enjoyed about her performance was watching her creative process at work. I enjoyed listening to her talking about education as exploration. I plan to teach someday, and I felt the information she gave to me about storytelling was invaluable. When Irene said that storytelling only requires humanness and a voice, that really struck a chord in me." Carolyn Herring, student, Schreiner College, Kerville, TX "I really appreciated Ike's performance and participation in class. She has such a power to really get the imagination going. She offered some insight into creating another world, one in which all things are animate. It really is magical to be in her presence." Lori Hughes, student, Schreiner College, Kerville, TX |
