All Covert Middle and High School students participated in a series of “ice
breaker” games on Mix It Up Day on Thursday, November 21st.
Mix It Up Day is a nationwide event encouraging students to meet and
mix with one another in ways that help to break down social divisions.
On Mix It Up Day in Covert, students competed for prizes in three “mix
it up” contests. The three contests were: The Puzzle Game, The Question
Game, and the Lunchroom Mix. The winning Middle School groups (1st through
5th place groups) and winning High School groups (1st through 7th place
groups) took a bus to Roller World, plus a pizza party.
These are the instructions the students had as entered began the games:
· The Puzzle Game: Each student will be given
a piece of a puzzle (each puzzle will have six pieces total). Each student
has to find the other six people with the other six pieces. The first
group to find each other and complete their puzzle wins.
· The Question Game: Each group will get a page
of questions about the people in their group. Each person must interview
two other people in their group, and write down the answers (note: everyone
in the group must be interviewed at least once). The first group to finish
all of their Question Pages wins.
· The Lunch Mix: At lunchtime, each group must
find one another and sit together at the lunch table. Judges will take
photos of each group to document success.
Mix It Up Day was organized by the Covert Student Council, the Podemos
student organization and the New World Remix project. All Covert Middle
and High School students participated and all teachers participated as
facilitators. Mix It Up Day is designed to challenge social boundaries
in Middle and High Schools, to show there can be rewards for stepping
outside of comfort zones to try new things and meet new people. The Mix
It Up Day project’s national sponsor is Teaching Tolerance. For
