Participating students in the New World Remix project took their dance
performance and multimedia installation to the Van Buren ISD Learning
Center and Conference Center in May 2003. Performing for and with the
severely multiply impaired students at the Bert Goen's Learning Center
(VBISD) was the emotional high point of New
World Remix. The Covert students came together completely in response
to the special students. They wanted to talk to them, take pictures with
them, hold their hands, demonstrate a caring compassion. Dancers put aside
their self-consciousness and performed with more zest and enthusiasm than
they had achieved in front of their other audiences. The Learning Center
staff assured me that this was normal behavior. For our students it was
a very special and tender moment.
Comments from that day:
The students who participated at the Learning Center were impacted profoundly
by their interaction with the impaired students through group dancing
sculptures and tours of the multimedia installation.
Our favorite audience was the Learning Center Kids. The dancers performed
with more zest and enthusiasm and truly enjoyed talking to the special
students. (Teachers commented for days that students were sharing their
experience with them.)
